Latisse

This is the first and only treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to considerably improve shortage of or inadequate eyelashes. LATISSE® fosters gradual growth of eyelashes making them appear longer and thicker. You can see amazing results after 12 to 16 weeks of using it appropriately.

Its active ingredient is 0.03% bimatoprost ophthalmic solution. This was initially used for treating ocular glaucoma. How Latisse works is not exactly understood, but it is believed that it affects growth of eyelashes by increasing the active period of their growth cycle as well as the percent of eyelashes in the particular growth period.

How is it used?

When using Latisse, make sure to clean your face well and to remove all kinds of make-up or contact lens before applying it.  Individuals who use contact lens must wait 15 minutes after applying Latisse before they wear their lens again. Application is performed at night once a day.  One of the applicators included in the kit is used to apply Latisse.  The applicator is held horizontally and a drop of the product is used to wet the tip of the applicator. The product is immediately applied to the skin around the base of eyelashes with outward movements starting at the area nearest to nose. Any excess of product on the skin should be removed. The applicator is discarded and the process is repeated with a new clean applicator on the other side. If you miss a dosage, do not repeat the frequency of your application; continue with the treatment plan without making any changes.

Latisse is used only on upper eyelids. Treatment results are gradual, but the majority of individuals can see improvement in the density of eyelashes after 8 weeks. Patients can use mascara while they continue treatment.

Latisse has been proven to be safe, but – as with all medications – it can have side effects. The most common side effects are itching and redness. These occur in about 4% of the cases. Other common secondary effects are irritation, eye dryness, and redness of eyelids. Darkening of the skin on the eyelids has also been reported. This effect has been reversed once the medication is discontinued. Another side effect that can occur is darkening of the iris (the colored part of the eye). This effect can be permanent.

Investment

Latisse costs between $109 and $119, and it can be obtained in the majority of pharmacies with prescription. The sealed package contains a bottle of medication and 60 sterile applications. This is enough for a one month treatment. If you discontinue using Latisse, the eyelashes will return to their previous appearance in a couple of weeks or months. At the Instituto Cirugía Orbitofacial, we provide discount coupons to use for your purchase of Latisse.
